 We should all be more open to the possibility that things don't always work the way we think they do; and we should be careful to draw conclusions about a thing not working the way we think it should (more to come later).

Failure and the darkness of success

Most of us, most of the time, are failures. This is not unexpected: there are many ways to do things wrong, relatively few to do them right. We should probably just accept this as a condition of life; instead we obsess over achieving one of the very limited set of outcomes defined for us as success. I don't really have a mission statement here, but for now I will be posting my occasional thoughts on subjects I tend to think about a lot (literature/music/film, US politics and culture, life in general) and my hope is to eventually synthesize some of these ideas into longer-form essays. 1. Notes on Stephen Dedalus  Poets are, after all, ordinary people. Rimbaud ended his life as a merchant and "bourgeois trafficker"; one suspects that Keats and Shelley, had they not died young, would have ended up much the same. Art is always being intruded upon by gross, indecent life. The need to pay the bills, to eat and expel, to gratify our base sexual urges, inevitably crowds out whatever momentary epiphanies we have had; in the long run it threatens to swallow them up whole. This does not have to result in a spiritual (or literal) suicide, though often enough and tragically it does. What it does manifest as is perpetual despair. When we first meet Stephen, he is in the throes of this: guilt-ridden, destitute, locked out of his home. His mind teems with philosophic and poetic ideas, but these invariably run into dead-ends.
